Hypertension Clinical Trial - The ZENITH Study

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, happens when the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries is consistently too high. Think of it like water pressure in a hosepipe – if the pressure stays too high for too long, it can cause damage.

About the ZENITH Study

The ZENITH study is a clinical research study from pharmaceutical company Alnylam. It is evaluating an investigational medication to see if it may help heart health in people with hypertension.

Researchers want to find out whether this investigational medicine may reduce the risk of serious health problems, such as heart attack and stroke, in people with uncontrolled high blood pressure.

This study is available at our Manchester and London clinics. Participants may receive up to £1,125 for their time and commitment.

Who is More Likely to Have High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure and heart problems are more common in people with certain risk factors. These include:

  • Smoking
  • Regular or heavy alcohol consumption
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Limited physical activity or an unhealthy lifestyle
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Existing heart or blood vessel disease

If you have one or more of these risk factors, and you are current taking antihypertensive medications for 2+ months, you may have a higher chance of being eligible for this study.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have questions about participating in our clinical trial. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive from potential participants. For more information, visit our full FAQs page or browse our Information Hub.

What is a hypertension clinical trial and why are they important?
A hypertension clinical trial is a research study that tests new treatments for high blood pressure. These studies help doctors find better ways to control blood pressure and reduce the risk of serious health problems like heart attacks and strokes. Around one in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure, and many people find their current medication does not work well enough. By joining a high blood pressure clinical trial, you can help researchers discover treatments that could benefit millions of people living with this condition.
Eligibility depends on the specific study, but most hypertension clinical trials in the UK look for adults who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Some studies need participants whose blood pressure is not well controlled by their current medication, whilst others may accept people who have only recently been diagnosed. You will need to attend a screening appointment where the research team will check your blood pressure, review your medical history, and explain what the study involves. Our team will let you know if you are suitable during this first visit.
When you join our hypertension clinical trial, you will first have a screening visit at one of our clinics in London or Manchester. During the study, you may receive a new treatment being tested or continue with standard care, depending on how the trial is designed. Our experienced medical team will monitor your health closely throughout, including regular blood pressure checks. You will have access to specialist care and contribute to research that could improve treatment for high blood pressure in the future. Travel expenses are covered for all appointments.
Yes, participant safety is our top priority. All hypertension clinical trials in the UK must be approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and an independent ethics committee before they can begin. Our research team has over 130 years of combined experience in clinical trials and follows strict safety guidelines. You will be closely monitored throughout the study, and you can withdraw at any time if you change your mind. Before joining, we will explain all known risks and answer any questions you have.
